Contarelli Chapel - Rome

The Contarelli Chapel is located in the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi, St. Louis of the French Church in Rome and the history of its decoration is particularly complex. In 1591, Cavalier D’Arpino undertook decorating the entire chapel after small contributions from various artists, and around 1592-1593, he finished the fresco and stucco decoration of the vault. In 1599, after delays caused by Cavalier d’Arpino and solicitations for the decoration delivery, Caravaggio was commissioned to decorate the side walls. In 1600, Caravaggio painted the first two canvases and in 1602, after some obstacles, he was able to deliver the third painting placed above the altar. We carried out restoration of the frescoes and the stuccoes of the vault and of all the marble covering of walls, floor and altar. The three Caravaggio paintings were in very good state of preservation and we determined they didn’t need restoration.
